The problem faced is to turn an average book, black and white or color, into something else, to completely get rid of the book. I chose a black and white book and at first was thinking of doing something abstract like but support was an issue, pages were too heavy and in the end were making the piece lopsided. So, I changed my idea to a mini field of flowers. I found the middle of the book and ripped pages from each side to keep it even, and made flowers out of those pages, tearing strips to wrap around the stem to add texture. I then began to make strips in the remaining pages of the book and rolled the to create a textured ground which I felt would give a more field like feeling. After the critique I realized I should do something more with the cover of the book because as of now it still has a book like feeling to it. So I will be working further on this project to eliminate the cover in some way, most likely trimming it and fraying the edges.
You solved the problems presented in both phases of serial plane project in a very creative and unique way. Your research of methods and techniques to generate volume and mass from flat surfaces, as well as your exploration of negative space in both materials were very successful.
ReplyDeleteIt was also very interesting to follow your journey from original ideas through its transformation, and translation into the final pieces presented. Beyond the geometric aspect of the bird, if not realism, you achieved a particular sense of “life” through this repetition of planes (bones, feathers) and expressive eyes given to your bird. It is a very interesting hanging piece
Excellent documentation process and inclusion of research images.
Just as a note: you can take better pictures of both final pieces in a background that enhances their view, exploring lights and shadows from different perspectives, etc. Take advantage of lighting and backgrounds set in the classroom for that purpose. I also look forward to see your further alterations of the book sculpture.
